After Abraham passed the greatest test of his faith — offering Isaac as a burnt offering to God̶his wife Sarah died. Having endured an extremely stressful test and then lost his wife, Abraham may have felt a sense of emptiness. Furthermore, Chapter 22, verse 20, records that news arrived from his hometown about his brother and his family. When something like that happens, most people probably think, “I want to go back home.” After mourning Sarah’s death, Abraham negotiated with the Hittites to purchase a burial plot. They demanded a price about ten times the usual rate, but Abraham agreed to it and purchased the Cave of Machpelah. He could have chosen to bury Sarah in Haran, where his family lived, but he deliberately chose to purchase a burial plot in Canaan. For Abraham, this act was an expression of his faith that Canaan was the land where he and his descendants were to dwell. Even during the lowest points of his life, Abraham did not make the wrong choice because he knew his true homeland —the homeland in heaven. The Apostle Paul said this to tell us that heaven is our true home: “Our citizenship is in heaven.” (Philippians 3:20) When we live with this awareness, our lives move in the right direction. Conversely, when our minds are preoccupied with worldly matters, our lives veer off course. It is important for us to ask ourselves whether our lives are heading in the right direction. Even if we have strayed from the right path, when we repent and turn back to God, He will generously forgive us. Let us follow Abraham’s example and walk with our eyes fixed on our heavenly home.
アブラハムが人生最大の信仰のテスト(イサクを全焼のいけにえとして神に捧げること)にパスした後、彼の妻サラが死んだ。高い緊張を強いられるテストを乗り越え、また妻を失ったアブラハムは、この時期、喪失感に苛まれていたであろう。更に、22章20節を見ると、彼の故郷から兄弟の近況報告が告げられている。そのような時、普通の人であれば、「故郷に帰りたい」と思うだろう。喪に服した後、アブラハムは墓地を購入するためにヘテ人達と交渉をした。彼らは通常の約十倍の値段を要求したが、アブラハムはそれを了承して、マクペラの洞穴を購入した。彼には、家族が住むハランにサラを葬るという選択肢もあったはずだが、敢えてカナンに墓地を購入した。この行為は、アブラハムにとって、彼と彼の子孫が住むべき地はカナンであるという信仰の宣言に他ならなかった。人生の低迷期においても、アブラハムが選択を誤らなかったのは、彼が自分の真の故郷を知っていたからである。それは天の故郷だ。(ヘブル11:14)使徒パウロは,私達にとっても、天国こそが真の故郷であることを伝えるためにこう言った。「私達の国籍は天にあります。」(ピリピ3:20)私達がこの事を自覚して生きるとき、私達の人生は正しい方向に進む。逆に、もし私達の意識がこの世の事柄に捕らわれているならば、私達は人生の方向性を誤っていると言えるだろう。「私の人生は正しい方向に向かっているだろうか?」と自問する事が重要である。もしも方向性を誤っていたとしても、悔い改めて神に立ち返る時、彼は私達を寛大に赦して下さる。私達はアブラハムの例に倣い、天の故郷を目指して、人生の旅路を歩んで行こう。
