Isaac and Rebekah had twin sons, Esau and Jacob. The prophet Malachi said, “God loved Jacob but hated Esau.” In his Epistle to the Romans, Paul quoted this passage in the context of God’s election and compared the attitudes of Jacob and Esau toward God. Jacob was loved by God because he responded to God’s call, while Esau was not esteemed by God because he disregarded spiritual matters. All Christians are chosen by God. He chose us with a purpose and a plan. If we live by faith and respond to God’s calling, we will be blessed. Through the contrast between Jacob and Esau, we will learn about responding with faith. When the two reached adulthood, Esau became a skilled hunter and a man of the wilderness. At first glance, this expression seems positive, but in Hebrew, It carries a negative connotation. The fact that he became “a man of the wilderness” means that he chose to live apart from his family ties. He disregarded his loyalty to his family, and the covenant God had made with his ancestors. In contrast, Jacob is described as “a quiet man,” a term that in the original language means “a righteous man.” He remained loyal to his family and held God’s covenant in high regard. One day, when Esau returned from hunting, he felt hungry and asked Jacob for something to eat. When Jacob proposed that he trade his birthright for it, Esau accepted. The birthright was the right to inherit not only material possessions but also spiritual blessings. In other words, Esau disregarded the spiritual blessings. The difference between Jacob and Esau lay in the fact that Jacob was highly sensitive to spiritual matters, while Esau was insensitive. Let us follow Jacob’s example and live with keen spiritual sensitivity.
イサクとリベカの間に、双子の息子エサウとヤコブが誕生した。預言者マラキは、「神はヤコブを愛し、エサウを憎んだ」と語った。パウロはローマ書において、神の選びに関する文脈の中で、この聖句を引用し、ヤコブとエサウの信仰を比較した。ヤコブは神の召しに応答したがために神から愛され、エサウは霊的な事柄を軽んじたがために、神から評価されなかった。クリスチャンは皆、神から選ばれた者達である。神は目的を持って私達を選ばれた。もし私達が信仰によって、神の召しに応答して生きるならば祝福を受ける。ヤコブとエサウの対比から、信仰の応答について学ぶ。二人が成人した時、エサウは巧みな猟師、野の人となった。一見、彼は活発で好意的な人物に見えるが、ヘブル語ではここに否定的なニュアンスがある。彼が「野の人」となったとは、彼が家族の絆から外れて生きる事を選んだ事を意味するのだ。彼は、家族への忠誠と、神が彼の父祖達と結んだ契約とを軽んじた。それに対し、ヤコブは「穏やかな人」だったとあり、これは原語では「正しい人」という意味を持つ。彼は家族への忠誠心を持ち、神の契約を重んじたのだ。ある日、エサウが猟から戻ると、彼は空腹を覚え、ヤコブに食べ物を求めた。ヤコブが彼に、長子の権利と引き換える事を提案すると、エサウはそれを受けた。長子の権利とは、財産相続権と共に、霊的祝福を相続するための権利である。エサウは霊的祝福を求めなかったのだ。ヤコブとエサウの違いは、ヤコブは霊的な事柄に関する感受性が強く、エサウは鈍感だった事にある。私達もヤコブに倣い、鋭い霊的感性を持って生きよう。
