Jacob traveled through the wilderness and arrived in Haran, where his relatives lived. During his journey, God appeared to Jacob and made three promises to him: that his descendants would prosper, that the land would be given to his descendants, and that God would protect him throughout his journey. Shortly after arriving in Haran, he met Rachel, the woman who would later become his wife. Jacob went to see Rachel’s father Laban and stayed at his house. Jacob wanted to marry Rachel, but since he had no dowry, he agreed to serve Laban for seven years without pay. Seven years passed, and Jacob got married, but Laban deceived him and forced him to marry Leah, Rachel’s older sister. When Jacob became angry, Laban demanded that he serve him for another seven years in exchange for Rachel as his wife. Jacob accepted this demand and ended up serving Laban for a total of 14 years. Why was Jacob made to face such hardships, even though God had promised to bless him? Behind it all lay God’s plan, which beyond human understanding. Laban also gave Jacob two female slaves, so he ended up with a total of four wives. Through them, he fathered twelve sons, from whom the twelve tribes of Israel descended. Furthermore, Judah was born to Leah, and later, Jesus was born as a descendant of Judah. In other words, if Jacob had not married Leah, Jesus would not have been born on earth. Even behind events that at first glance seem like misfortunes, God’s providence was at work. God is the One who works all things together for the good of those who love Him. Let us walk in trust in Him.
ヤコブは荒野を旅し、彼の親族が住むハランに到着した。その旅の途中で神はヤコブに現れ、三つの事柄を約束した。彼の子孫が繁栄すること。彼の子孫に土地が与えられること。彼の旅が神によって守られること。ハランに到着して間もなく、彼は、後に彼の妻となる女性ラケルに出会った。ヤコブはラケルの父であり、自身の叔父であるラバンに会いに行き、そのまま彼の家に滞在した。ヤコブはラケルと結婚したかったが、花嫁料を持っていなかったため、彼に無報酬で7年間仕えることとなった。7年が経ち、ヤコブは婚礼を挙げたが、ラバンによって騙され、ラケルの姉レアと結婚させられてしまった。怒るヤコブに対し、ラバンは、ラケルを彼に妻として与える代わりに、もう7年間彼に仕えるよう要求した。ヤコブはその要求を受け入れ、結果的に14年もの間、ラバンに仕えることとなった。何故、神が祝福を約束したにも関わらず、ヤコブはこのような困難に直面させられたのか?そこには、人間の思いを越えた神の計画があった。ラバンはヤコブに2人の女奴隷をも与え、彼は計4人の妻を持つこととなった。彼は、彼女達を通して、12人の息子達をもうけ、そこからイスラエル12部族が派生したのだ。それに加え、レアからユダが生まれ、後にユダの子孫としてイエスキリストが誕生した。つまり、もしヤコブがレアと結婚していなかったら、イエスはこの地に生まれなかったのだ。一見災いと思われる出来事の背後にも、神の摂理が働いていた。神は神を愛する者のためには、全ての事を働かせて益としてくださる方である。私達は彼に信頼して歩もう。
