As Abraham entered his twilight years, he had one final task remaining: to find a wife for his son Isaac. He entrusted this task to Eliezer, the servant he trusted most. Eliezer went to Haran with camels, seeking to find a wife for Isaac among Abraham’s relatives. When he arrived in Haran, he went to a well and prayed to God there. Then, just as he finished praying, Rebekah appeared. She gave water not only to Eliezer but also to the camels. This act was in perfect harmony with the content of Eliezer’s prayer. Convinced that Rebekah was the one chosen by God, Eliezer gave her some of the gifts he had prepared and visited her home. There, he met Laban, Rebekah’s brother. When Laban saw the expensive jewelry Rebekah was wearing, he realized that Eliezer’s master must be a wealthy man. Blinded by greed, Laban agreed to let Rebekah become Isaac’s wife. Rebekah immediately decided to move to Canaan and became Isaac’s wife. This story unfolded at a brisk pace and flowed smoothly. The Holy Spirit was at work behind all the events that took place. In this chapter, Abraham symbolizes God the Father, Isaac symbolizes Jesus Christ, and Eliezer symbolizes the Holy Spirit. Furthermore, Rebekah symbolizes the bride of Christ—that is, the church of the New Testament era. When people of character like Rebekah —who are hardworking, full of love, and possess decisiveness and initiative —live in response to the work of the Holy Spirit, God’s plan will be fulfilled. Let us strive to grow in character. By doing so, we will be able to experience the dynamic work of the Holy Spirit.
晩年を迎えたアブラハムには最後のタスクが残されていた。それは、息子イサクの妻となる女性を見つける事であった。彼はその仕事を、彼が最も信頼していたしもべエリエゼルに託した。エリエゼルは十頭のラクダを連れてハランに生き、アブラハムの親族の中からイサクの妻となる女性を見つけ出そうとした。ハランに着くと、彼は井戸に行き、そこで神に祈った。すると、祈り終えた途端、そこにリベカが現れたのだ。彼女はエリエゼルにだけなく、ラクダにも水を与えた。それはエリエゼルの祈りの内容と完全に一致した行為であった。リベカこそが神の選びの人である事を確信したエリエゼルは、用意していたギフトの一部を彼女に与え、彼女の家を訪問した。そこにはリベカの兄ラバンがいた。彼は、リベカが高価な宝石を身につけているのを見て、エリエゼルの主人が金持ちである事を察した。欲に目が眩んだラバンは、リベカをイサクの妻とする事を了承した。リベカはすぐにエリエゼルと共にカナンに移住する事を決断し、イサクの妻となった。この物語は非常にテンポ良く展開している。つまり、全ての出来事の背後に聖霊の働きがあったのだ。この章において、アブラハムは父なる神の象徴、イサクはキリストの象徴、エリエゼルは聖霊の象徴である。ま た、リベカはキリストの花嫁、つまり新約時代の教会を象徴している。リベカのような人格者、—勤勉で、愛に富み、決断力と行動力のある者—が聖霊の働きに応答して生きる時、神の計画は実現していく。私達もリベカのような人格者になる事を目指して霊的成長をしていこう。それによって、私達はダイナミックな聖霊の働きを体験する事が出来る。
