To escape Esau’s wrath, Jacob set out alone for Haran. Separated from his family and left all alone, his heart must have been filled with regret, fear, and anxiety. As the sun set, he lay down in the wilderness, placed a stone under his head, and fell asleep. Then, in a dream, the Lord appeared to him. Until then, he had known God only intellectually, but at that moment, he came to know God experientially. That was the moment of Jacob’s spiritual awakening. After hearing God’s voice, he took the stone and poured oil on it. This was a symbolic act, signifying his decision to dedicate his life to God. Furthermore, he vowed to give 10 percent of his income to God. Through this event, it became clear that Jacob —not Esau —was the heir to Abraham’s covenant. It also became clear that Abraham’s covenant included a blessing for the Gentiles. The key to receiving God’s blessing is to live a life of devotion to Him. This requires sacrifice, but God loves those who willingly dedicate themselves to Him. In the dream Jacob had, a ladder descended from heaven, and angels were ascending and descending on it. The Lord was standing above the ladder. In other words, that ladder connected heaven and earth. Shortly after Jesus began His public ministry, He said to Nathanael, “You will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” (John 1:51) In these words, Jesus compares Himself to the ladder that Jacob saw. In other words, in the New Testament era, Jesus is the One who connects us to our Heavenly Father. When we make the decision to live a life devoted to God, that place becomes Bethel (meaning “House of God”). Through this, spiritual blessings are poured out upon us through Jesus Christ.
エサウの怒りから逃れるために、ヤコブは一人ハランへと旅立っ た。家族を離れ、孤独になった彼の心は、後悔の念や恐れ、不安に満たされていただろう。日が沈んだ時、彼は石を枕にして荒野で横になった。すると夢の中で、主が彼に現れたのだ。それまで彼は神を知識としては知っていたが、この時に彼は体験的に神を知った。それはヤコブの霊的開眼の瞬間であった。神の言葉を聞いた後、彼は枕にしていた石を取り、そこに油を注いだ。これは象徴的行為であり、この時、彼は神に献身して生きる決断をしたのだ。更に彼は、自らの収入の10%を神に捧げる事を誓った。エサウではなくヤコブがアブラハム契約の相続者となったが、神から祝福を受けるための鍵は、神に献身して生きる事である。そこには犠牲が伴うが、しかし神は喜んで捧げる者達を愛される。事実、ヤコブは後にイスラエルという新しい名を神から授かった。ヤコブの見た夢の中で、天から梯子が降りてきて、それを御使い達が登り降りしていた。その梯子の上には主がおられた。つまり、その梯子は天と地とを繋ぐものだったのだ。イエスが公生涯の初めに、ナタナエルに対してこう言った。「天が開けて、神の御使いたちが人の子を上り下りするのを、あなたがたはいまに見ます。」(ヨハネ1:51)この発言の中で、イエスはご自身をヤコブの見た梯子に準えている。つまり、新約時代の今、イエスこそが天の父と私達とを繋ぐお方なのだ。私達が神に献身して生きる決断をする時、その場所はベテル(神の家の意)となる。それにより、イエスキリストを通して、私達に霊的祝福が注がれるのだ。
