When Abraham was 86 years old, his wife Sarah suggested that he have a child with her female slave, Hagar. Abraham agreed, and he and Hagar had a son named Ishmael. While this was perfectly natural within the culture of that time, from a faith perspective, it could be said that for Abraham and Sarah —who were unable to fully trust God’s promise —it was an act of unbelief. Ishmael, born from their unbelief, became the ancestor of the Arabs, and as God prophesied, much friction and conflict has arisen between Jews and Arabs to this day. After becoming pregnant with Ishmael, Hagar began to look down on her mistress, Sarah. Enraged by this, Sarah mistreated Hagar, and as a result, Hagar fled from Sarah. In those days, women were not allowed to work, so Hagar’s flight into the wilderness alone meant she was facing certain death. However, when God saw Hagar’s distress, He sent an angel to urge her to repent of her pride and return to Sarah. At that moment, Hagar said, “You are a God of seeing.” God is not indifferent to our lives. When we face problems and suffering, He is watching over us. Furthermore, God commanded Hagar to name her son Ishmael, which means “God hears.” In other words, God heard Hagar’s cries of distress, and He is the One who also hears our prayers. At times, just as with Abraham and Sarah, our faith may waver in the midst of trials. However, God is certainly the One who keeps us in His heart and listens to our voices. Let us trust in God and walk by faith.
アブラハムが86歳の時、彼の妻サラは、奴隷女ハガルによって子供をもうける事をアブラハムに提案した。アブラハムはそれを受け入れ、ハガルを通してイシュマエルを産んだ。これは当時の文化においてはごく当然のことであったが、信仰的側面から見ると、神の約束を信じきれなかったアブラハムとサラの不信仰の行為であったと言える。不信仰の結果として生まれたイシュマエルは、アラブ人の祖先となり、神が預言した通り、今日に至るまで、ユダヤ人との間に多くの摩擦や紛争を起こしている。イシュマエルを身籠った後、ハガルは自分の主人であるサラを見下げるようになった。それに怒りを覚えたサラは、ハガルを虐め、その結果ハガルはサラの元から逃亡した。この時代、女性達は仕事をする事が出来ず、ハガルが一人荒野に逃亡した事は、彼女が死に直面した事を意味する。しかしながら、ハガルの苦悩を見た神は天使を送ることで、彼女に、自らの高ぶりを悔い改めてサラの下に帰るよう促した。その時に、ハガルは「あなたはエルロイ(ご覧になる神)」と語った。神は私達の人生に対し、無関心なお方ではない。私達が問題や苦しみに直面する時、彼は私達の事を見てくださっている。更に、神はハガルから生まれる子の名をイシュマエル とするよう命じたが、これは「神は聞かれる」という意味である。つまり、神はハガルの苦しみの声を聞かれ、また私達が神に祈る声をも聞いて下さる方なのだ。時にアブラハムとサラのように、長い試練の中で、私達の信仰が揺るぐことがあるかも知れない。しかしながら、神は確かに私達を心に留め、私達の声に耳を傾けて下さるお方である。私達は神に信頼し、信仰によって生きていこう。
