When Abraham was 99 years old, God appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty. Walk before me and be blameless.” Then God told Abraham that a son would be born to him. However, since both Abraham and Sarah were advanced in age and past childbearing years, Abraham had assumed that Ishmael would be his heir. Therefore, even though he heard God’s voice, he laughed at the absurdity of it. In chapter 18, Sarah also let out an ironic laugh. So, God commanded them to name the son who would be born to them “Isaac” (meaning “laughter”). A year later, just as God had promised, Isaac was born to them, and at last they were able to laugh with joy. The phrase “God Almighty” (El Shaddai in Hebrew) appears 48 times in the Old Testament. It is used six times in Genesis, and five of those instances are in the context of the promise of descendants. In other words, when God referred to Himself as “El Shaddai,” it meant that He is the God who can bring forth life from a state that is as good as death. In the Bible, infertility is often likened to a wilderness or a desert. The prophet Isaiah vividly depicted the Gospel with the following words: “The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad; the desert shall rejoice and blossom like the crocus.” At times, we may face hardships. When we wait a long time for God’s blessings, but they do not come, we may feel as though we are “in the wilderness of life.” However, God is the One who can make water gush forth in the wilderness and cause flowers to bloom in the desert. Let us walk through life trusting in the Almighty God. Just like Abraham and Sarah, we too will overcome our trials and be able to laugh with joy.
アブラハムが99歳の時、神は彼に現れてこう語った。「私は全能の神である。あなたは私の前を歩み、全き者であれ。」それから神はアブラハムに、一年後に息子が誕生する事を告げたのだった。しかしながら、アブラハムは、自分もサラも高齢で子供が持てない年齢であることから、イシュマエルが自分の跡取りになると思い込んでいた。それ故、彼は神の言葉を聞いても皮肉な笑いを浮かべたのだった。またサラも18章で不信仰の笑いを見せている。そこで神は、彼らに生まれる息子を「イサク(笑いの意)」と名づけるように命じた。それから一年後、神の約束通り二人の間にイサクが誕生し、ついに彼らは喜び笑うことが出来た。全能の神(ヘブル語ではエルシャダイ)という表現は、旧約聖書に48回書かれている。創世記では6回使われており、その内5回は子孫の約束に関する文脈の中で用いられている。つまり、神がご自分を「エルシャダイ」と表現される時、それは死んだも同然の者達から、命を生み出すことが出来る神を意味したのだ。聖書において、不妊はしばしば荒野や砂漠に喩えられる。預言者イザヤは言葉を用いて、福音の絵を描き、こう語った。「荒野と砂漠は楽しみ、荒れ地は喜び、サフランのように花を咲かせる。」(イザヤ35:1)時に私達は、霊的、精神的、物質的な困難の中で、苦しむ事がある。長期間待っても神の祝福が訪れない時、それは人生の荒野であると言えるだろう。しかしながら、神は荒野に水を沸かせ、砂漠に花を咲かせる事のできるお方である。アブラハムとサラがイサクを授かって喜び笑ったように、私たちも必ず神の祝福によって喜び笑える日が来る。全能の神に信頼して生きていこう。
