After the Great Flood, human history began anew with Noah and his family. However, it wasn’t long before people rebelled against God again by attempting to build the Tower of Babel. God commanded Noah, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth,” but they refused to scatter across the earth. Instead, they sought to build a tower to demonstrate their power. In response, God confused their language, bringing the construction of the tower to a halt. Unable to communicate with one another, the people left the land of Shinar and dispersed across the earth. The root of their problem was their desire to “be like God.” In other words, rather than living under God’s authority and obeying Him, they wanted to live as they pleased. Today, ungodly values are spreading around the world. As a result, many people are living in defiance of God’s will. They lead lives devoted to pursuing their own pleasure. Prioritizing one’s desires over God’s will is akin to building the Tower of Babel. When we stray from God’s authority and become arrogant, He leads us through trials. In doing so, He breaks down our pride and restores our loving relationship with Him. David said, “The sacrifice of God is a broken spirit.” When he reached the pinnacle of success, he became arrogant and committed the sins of adultery and murder. When God confronted David about his sins, his pride was broken, and he was able to restore his intimate relationship with God. God has redeemed us from our sins through the blood of Christ. Having been redeemed, we now belong to God. Let us serve Him with joy.
大洪水の後、ノアと彼の家族から人類の歴史は再スタートした。ところが、しばらくすると人々は再び神に反逆し、バベルの塔の建設を企てた。神はノアに対し、「生めよ。増えよ。地に満ちよ」と命じたが、彼らは地の全面に散らされる事を拒み、自分達の権力を誇示する塔を建てようとしたのだ。それに対し、神は彼らの言葉を混乱させることで、塔の建設を止めさせた。コミュニケーションが取れなくなった人々は、シヌアルの地を離れ、全地に離散して住むようになった。彼らの問題の根本は「神のようになりたい」という願望であった。つまり、彼らは、神の権威の下で彼に従って生きるのではなく、自分の思いのままに生きたいと考えたのだ。今日、この世界では神無き価値観が拡がっている。その結果、人間は神の領域にまで踏み込み、自らの思いのままに生きようとしている。また、私達が神の御旨よりも、自らの思いを優先して生きようとすることも、バベルの塔を建てるような行為であると言えよう。私達が神の権威の下を離れ、高慢になる時、彼は私達に試練の中を通過させる。それによって私達の自我を砕き、再び神との愛の関係を回復させるのだ。ダビデは「神へのいけにえは砕かれた魂」だと言った。彼は成功の頂点に立った時、高慢になって姦淫と殺人の罪を犯した。神がダビデの罪を指摘した時、彼のプライドは砕かれ、神との親密な関係を取り戻したのだった。神は、キリストの血によって私達の罪を贖って下さった。買い取られた私達は、今や神の所有である。私達は、主なる神に喜びを持って仕えよう。
