After Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden, they had children. Their names were Cain and Abel. As they grew up, Cain became a farmer and Abel became a shepherd. One day, the two offered sacrifices to God. Cain offered the fruits of the ground, while Abel offered a lamb. God accepted Abel’s offering but not Cain’s. Why did He not accept Cain’s? One reason lies in the difference in their attitudes. Abel offered the firstborn of his flock —and the best part at that. In contrast, Cain made his offering out of a sense of obligation. Another reason was that animal blood was needed for offerings. After Adam and Eve sinned, God slaughtered an animal and made garments of hides for them. This event symbolized the redemption accomplished by Jesus. Just as God shed Jesus ’ blood for us, animal blood was necessary for offerings during the Old Testament era. Cain should have understood this, yet he offered only grain, not blood. Abel’s offering was an act of faith, while Cain’s offering was a religious act. When God did not accept Cain’s offering, Cain became furious and killed Abel. God said to Cain, “Abel’s blood cries out to me from the ground.” What was Abel’s blood crying out for? Vengeance against Cain. In contrast, the Bible states that Jesus’ blood also cries out. Hebrews 12:24 states, “The blood of Jesus speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.” What does Jesus’ blood speak of? It speaks of the forgiveness of our sins. Just as hatred arose between Cain and Abel, today’s world is filled with hostility and growing division. Only the blood of Jesus can bring peace. As people whose sins have been forgiven, let us forgive others and preserve our unity in Christ.
