The book of Genesis, chapter 2, focuses on the story of the Garden of Eden. God created Adam and put him in the garden. The Hebrew word used here for “put” means “rest.” Life in the Garden of Eden was filled with peace and rest. However, after Adam and Eve sinned, they were expelled from the garden. Since then, human life has been filled with hardships. Yet, when we live by the Holy Spirit, we can experience a life of peace similar to that in the Garden of Eden. We will learn more about life in the garden. First, there was joy in working the garden. God commanded Adam to cultivate it. This work was not a hardship, but rather a fulfilling endeavor. Interestingly, the Hebrew word for “cultivate” means “worship” or “serve.” In other words, work was a form of worship in the garden. When we live for God, our work becomes an act of worship. Second, humans had good relationships with God and with one another. Before sinning, humans enjoyed an intimate relationship with God. However, when they sinned, they became estranged from God. Furthermore, although Adam and Eve were both naked, they felt no shame. This was evident in their lack of shame about their physical nakedness and was also shown in their pure and honest relationship, free from secrets. They cared for each other and joyfully served God. As long as we live in this world, we remain imperfect. However, when we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we can experience a life similar to that in the Garden of Eden. Let us walk filled with the Holy Spirit.
創世記2章では、エデンの園に関する物語に焦点が置かれている。神はアダムを作り、彼を園に置いた。ここで使われている「置いた」とはヘブル語で安息を意味する単語が使われている。エデンの園での生活には平安と安息があったのだ。アダムとイブが罪を犯した事で、彼らは園を追放され、それ以来人間の生活には多くの困難が生じるようになった。しかしながら、私達が聖霊によって生きる時に、かつて人がエデンの園で持っていたような平安のある生活に近づくことが出来る。園での生活について学ぼう。第一番目に、園での労働には喜びがあった。神はアダムに園を耕すよう命じた。その労働は苦ではなく、充実感の伴うものであった。興味深い事に「耕す」を意味するヘブル語は、「礼拝」や「奉仕」を意味する言葉が使われている。つまり、エデンの園では労働そのものが、神への礼拝だったのだ。私達が神のために生きる時、私達のする労働は神への礼拝となるのだ。第二番目に、園では良好な神との関係と人間関係があった。罪を犯す前、人間は神と近しい関係にあった。ところが人が罪を犯したとき、そこに分断が起こり、人は神から離れ、彼の愛を感じられなくなってしまったのだ。更に、アダムとイブは二人とも裸であったが恥ずかしいとは感じなかった。これは物理的に裸であった事と同時に、精神的にも彼らが清く正直で隠し事の無い関係性を持っていた事を意味する。彼らは互いを労わり合い、また喜びを持って神に仕えていたのだ。この世界に生きる限り、私達は不完全である。しかしながら、聖霊に満たされて生きる時、私達はエデンの園での生活に近づく事ができる。聖霊に満たされて歩もう。
