Paul said he was writing to the Colossians about his struggles so that “their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ.” (v.2) The Christians in Colossians were undoubtedly inspired by Paul’s courage in proclaiming the gospel despite the threat of death. Paul also wanted them to maintain their unity in love. This is because people come to know Christ truly through the unity of the Church. Furthermore, Paul said, “Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” (v.3) Christ created all things in heaven and on earth, and he is full of wisdom and knowledge. His wisdom and knowledge far exceed anything that can be understood by humans. When we fully committed ourselves to Christ, He guides our lives according to His wisdom and knowledge. Sometimes we don’t know what the right choice is. However, Christ knows the “right path” for us and will guide us along it. The key is surrendering everything to him. To protect the Colossian Christians from the Gnostic heresy, Paul emphasized that the treasure lies in Christ. The Gnostics valued spiritual experiences and sought to have them. While spiritual experiences can be wonderful, they cannot form the foundation of faith. Christ is the foundation of our faith, and we build the church upon His word. As we are knit together in His love, we come to truly know Christ. Let us live seeking the treasure hidden in Him.
パウロはコロサイのクリスチャン達のために苦闘していた。それは、彼らが「心に励ましを受け、愛によって結び合わされ、理解をもって豊かな全き確信に達し、神の奥義であるキリストを真に知るようになるため」であった。死をも恐れず宣教に励むパウロの姿に、コロサイのクリスチャン達は励ましを受けていたに違いない。また、パウロは彼らが愛によって一致を保つ事を願っていた。何故ならば、教会が一致することによって、私達はキリストを真に知るようになるからである。更にパウロは「キリストのうちに、知恵と知識との宝がすべて隠されている」と語った。天地万物を創造されたキリストは知恵と知識に満ちた方である。それは人間の知恵を超越している。私達がキリストに全てを捧げる時、彼は私達の人生を、彼の知恵と知識に従って導いて下さる。時に、私達には何が正しい判断であるかがわからない時がある。しかしながら、キリストは私達にとっての「正しい道」を知っており、そこへと導いて下さるのだ。そのための鍵は、私達が全てを彼に明け渡すことである。パウロはキリストの内にこそ宝がある事を強調したが、それはグノーシス派の誤った教えから、コロサイのクリスチャン達を守るためであった。グノーシス派の人々は、霊的体験を重んじ、それを追求した。霊的な体験をする事は素晴らしいことではあるが、それは信仰の基盤とはならない。キリストこそが私達の信仰の土台であり、彼の言葉の上に私達は教会を建てあげるのだ。そして、私達に愛によって結び合わされる事で、私達はキリストを真に知るようになる。私達は彼の内にある宝を求めて生きよう。
