Paul says, “I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake.” Jesus became human and died on the cross. Through this, the redemption of humanity’s sins was accomplished, and His suffering came to an end. Since then, many Christians have dedicated their lives to God and engaged in missionary work. Though devotion involves pain, this is precisely what it means to “fill up what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions.” Paul rejoiced in his suffering for the sake of his beloved Christ. In today’s scripture, Paul uses the word “mystery” repeatedly. In this context, “mystery” refers to the indwelling of Christ. During Old Testament times, God’s presence resided in the Most Holy Place of the temple. A thick curtain separated this place from the rest of the temple, signifying the separation between sinful humanity and the holy God. However, when Jesus died on the cross, the curtain was torn, opening the Most Holy Place. In other words, through Jesus, we gained access to God. Furthermore, Christ now dwells within Christians. The fact that we can build an intimate relationship with God —that is the mystery hidden in the Old Testament era. We have Jesus within us. He is the Savior, the Healer, the Lord of lords, the King of kings. What matters is that we live our lives conscious of this wonderful spiritual reality. Aware of this, Paul declared, “I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.” The gospel is not proclaimed by our own strength, but by the power of Christ dwelling within us. Let us live with this glorious hope in mind.
パウロは「私は、あなたがたのために受ける苦しみを喜びとする」と語った。イエスは、私達を救うために人となり、十字架で死なれた。それによって人類の罪の贖いは成し遂げられ、彼の苦しみは終わった。その後、教会が誕生し、今日に至るまで、多くのクリスチャン達が犠牲を伴いながら、宣教に従事してきた。犠牲には痛みが伴うが、それこそが、「キリストの苦しみの欠けたところを満たす」行為である。パウロは、愛するキリストのために苦しむ事を喜びとしたのだ。今日の聖句の中でパウロは「奥義」という単語を繰り返し使っている。ここでの「奥義」とは、キリストの内住を意味する。旧約時代、神の臨在は神殿の至聖所にあった。その場所は分厚い幕で仕切られ、罪ある人間と聖い神との間には断絶がある事を示していた。ところが、イエスが十字架で息を引き取った時、その幕が裂かれ至聖所は開かれた。つまり、イエスを通して、私達は神に近づけるようになったのだ。それに加えて、クリスチャンの内にはキリストが住むようになった。神と親密な関係を築ける事、それこそが旧約時代には隠されていた奥義である。今、私達は、自らの内に神ご自身を持っている。彼は、救い主、癒し主、力、主の主、王の王である。私達にとって大切な事は、この素晴らしい霊的現実を意識して生活する事である。それを自覚していたパウロは「私は、自分の内に力強く働くキリストの力によって労苦し、奮闘している」と語った。福音宣教は、自らの力でするのではなく、私達の内に住まわれるキリストの力によって成されるのだ。私達はこの栄光をしっかりと意識して生きよう。
