God said to Abram, “Fear not, Abram.” No doubt Abram’s heart was filled with fear and anxiety at that time. This was because he had not yet been given a son to inherit his name and his possessions. This is the first place in the Bible where the words “Fear not” appear. Like Abram, we are all prone to fear. To be freed from fear, we must trust in God. God said to Abram, referring to Himself, “I am your shield.” In chapter 14, Abram defeated the allied forces of five kings, and it was God who brought him victory. Similarly, though our lives are filled with various challenges and hardships, God gives us the strength to overcome them. Trusting in God, our shield, is the secret to living a victorious life. After that, God performed a ceremony to establish a covenant with Abram. God commanded Abram to bring several kinds of livestock and birds and had him cut them in two. Then God put him into a deep sleep, and God’s glory passed between the bodies of the animals. This was called a covenant of blood, a covenant that could never be broken. Normally, both parties to a contract would pass through it, but on this occasion, only God passed through. This indicated that the Abrahamic Covenant was a unilateral contract. In other words, it was a covenant that would not be invalidated even if Abraham or his descendants failed to fulfill their part. In the same way, through Christ, we have entered into a new covenant relationship with God. Even if we fail or fall into unbelief, God remains faithful to His covenant. Let us trust in God, who keeps His covenant
神はアブラムに語りかけた。「恐れるな。アブラム。」おそらく、この時アブラムの心には恐れや不安があったのだろう。それは、彼の家督と遺産を相続する息子がなかなか与えられなかったためであった。聖書の中で、ここで初めて「恐れるな」という言葉が記されている。アブラムだけでなく、私達はみな恐れを抱きやすい存在である。恐れから解放されるために必要なのは、神に信頼する事である。神はご自分を指してこう言われた。「私はあなたの盾である。」14章でアブラムは五つの王国の連合軍に勝利したが、彼に勝利をもたらしたのは神であった。同様に、私達の人生には様々な戦いや困難が伴うが、神は私達にそれらを乗り越える強さを与えて下さる。私達の盾である神に信頼する事こそが、勝利の人生を生きる秘訣なのだ。その後、神はアブラムと契約を締結させるための儀式を行った。神はアブラムに数種類の家畜と鳥を持ってくるように命じ、それらを二つに切り裂かせた。それから、神は彼を深い眠りにつかせ、神の栄光が動物達の体の間を通り過ぎた。それは、血の契約と呼ばれ、決して破られる事のない契約であった。通常、契約の当事者双方がそこを通るのだが、この時は神だけがそこを通った。これは、アブラハム契約が片務契約であった事を示している。つまり、この契約は、アブラハムや彼の子孫 が失敗したとしても無効にならない契約なのだ。同様に、私達はキリストを通して、神との新しい契約関係に入った。私達は失敗したり、不信仰に陥ったりするが、神は祝福の契約を守り通される。私達は契約を守られる神に信頼し、信仰によって生きよう。
