God commanded Abraham to leave his homeland, “separate” himself from his old culture, and go to the land He would show him. Abraham obeyed God’s voice and set out on a journey of faith, not knowing where he was going. When he arrived in the Promised Land, he went first to the oak of Moreh in Shechem. “Moreh” means “diviner,” and that place was the center of Canaan’s indigenous religion. There, Abraham built an altar and worshiped God. This act expressed Abraham’s commitment to separating himself from the corrupt Canaanite culture and living in obedience to the one true God. In the Bible, Shechem is portrayed as a place of decision. In Deuteronomy 11, God presented the Israelites with a choice: to live under his guidance and receive blessings or to disobey him and face a curse. After King Solomon’s death, it was in Shechem that Rehoboam chose whether to ease the people’s heavy taxes and labor. (He made the wrong choice, which led to the division of the kingdom.) Similarly, we must make a decision whether or not to receive God’s blessings. The decision is whether to believe in Jesus as the Messiah and to live in obedience to him. After Abraham built the altar, God tested his faith. A severe famine struck Canaan. Abraham should have trusted that God would provide for all his needs during this time, but his faith had not yet matured to that point, so he fled to Egypt. There, he and Sarah faced hardships, but God protected them in accordance with his covenant. Like Abraham, we sometimes falter in our faith. Even if our faith is imperfect, we should resolve to follow God and continue our journey of faith.
神はアブラハムに対し、故郷を離れ、古い文化から「分離」して、彼が示す地に行くよう命じた。アブラハムは神の声に従い、行き先を知らずに信仰の旅に出た。彼が約束の地に着き、最初に行った場所は、シェケムのモレの樫の木のところであった。「モレ」とは占い師を意味し、そこはカナンの土着宗教の中心地であった。彼はそこで祭壇を築き、神を礼拝した。それはアブラハムが、カナン人の腐敗した文化から自らを分離し、真の神に従って生きるという決断の表明であった。聖書において、シェケムは決断の地として描かれている。申命記11章で、神はイスラエルの民に対し、彼に従って生きる事で祝福を受けるか、従わずに呪いを受けるかの選択を迫った。またソロモン王の死後、レハブアムが民への重税と重労働を軽減するかどうかの選択をしたのもシェケムであった。(レハブハムは誤った選択をし、国を分裂させてしまった。)私達も、神からの祝福を受けて生きるためには、決断をしなければならない。それは、イエスをキリストとして信じるかどうか、また彼に従って生きるかどうかの決断である。アブラハムの決断後、神は彼の信仰を試した。カナンに激しい飢饉が訪れたのだ。この時、アブラハムは神が全ての必要を満たして下さる事を信じるべきであったが、彼の信仰はまだそこまで成熟しておらず、エジプトに避難してしまった。そこでアブラハムとサラは困難を経験したが、神は契約に基づいて彼らを守った。私達もアブラハムのように、失敗したり、不信仰に陥ったりすることがある。たとえ不完全な信仰であっても、私達は神に従う決断をし、信仰の旅路を前進しよう。
