Continuing from last sermon, we will learn a lesson in faith by examining the difference between Abraham’s mindset and Lot’s mindset. While Abraham’s heart sought the true God and truth, Lot’s heart sought wealth and pleasure. After parting ways with Abraham, Lot settled “near” Sodom (13:12). However, chapter 14 states that he lived within the borders of Sodom. In other words, he was gradually drawn into Sodom’s corrupt culture. At one point, a battle broke out between the allied forces of the Semitic kingdoms and those of the Hamitic kingdoms. When the Semitic alliance emerged victorious, they plundered all the inhabitants and possessions of Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot, who had sought wealth, lost all his possessions. Upon hearing this, Abraham set out with those who had made a covenant with him and his trained servants to rescue Lot and his family. Launching a surprise attack in the middle of the night, Abraham defeated the enemy forces and recovered all the people and property that had been taken captive. Later, Melchizedek, king of Salem, appeared before Abraham. Since he served as both a king and a priest, he is considered a foreshadowing of Jesus Christ. Melchizedek blessed Abraham, and Abraham gave him a tenth of the spoils. Here we see the origin of tithing. Lot, who sought wealth, faced hardship, but Abraham, who sought God’s kingdom above all else, was blessed. What is it that our hearts truly seek? If we live like Abraham —seeking God first and offering Him our very best —God will bless us. Let us live trusting in God, who keeps His covenant.
前回に引き続き、私達はアブラハムの心構えとロトの心構えの違いから信仰のレッスンを学ぶ。アブラハムの心は、真の神と真理を追求していたのに対し、ロトの心は富と快楽を追求していた。ロトはアブラハムと別れて後、ソドムの近くに住んだ。(13:12)しかし、14章では、彼はソドムの国内に住んでいたと記されている。つまり、彼は徐々にソドムの腐敗した文化の中に引き込まれていったのだ。ある時、セム族の王国の連合軍と、ハム族の王国の連合軍の間で戦いが起こった。セム族の連合軍がこの戦いに勝利した事で、ソドムとゴモラの全住民と財産は彼らに略奪されてしま った。富を追求したロトは、この時、全財産を失った。アブラハム がこの出来事を知った時、彼は、自分と盟約を結んでいた人々と、訓練された彼のしもべ達を連れて、ロトとその家族を救い出すための戦いに出た。夜中に奇襲攻撃をかけた事で、アブラハムは敵軍に勝利し、奪われた全ての人々と財産を取り返した。その後、アブラハムの前にシャレムの王メルキゼデクが表れた。彼は王でありながら、祭司の役割も果たしていたという面において、イエスキリストの予表であったと考えられる。メルキゼデクはアブラハムを祝福し、アブラハムは彼に戦利品の十分の一を捧げた。ここに私達は、十分の一献金の原型を見る。富を追求したロトは困難を経験し、神を第一に求めたアブラハムは祝福を受けた。私達の心は一体何を求めているだろうか?アブラハムのように、神を第一に求め、最善のものを彼に捧げて生きるならば、神は私達を祝福してくださる。契約を守られる神に信頼して生きよう。
