Abraham and his family moved to Egypt, where they became wealthy. Although Abraham made the mistake of pretending that Sarah was his sister, he was able to acquire wealth because of the Abrahamic Covenant. However, that wealth caused problems between Abraham’s servants and Lot’s servants. As the number of livestock and servants increased, the pastureland became scarce, and disputes arose among the herdsmen. To resolve this issue, Abraham made a generous proposal to Lot. He suggested that they go their separate ways and he gave Lot first choice of where to settle. Lot chose to settle in Sodom and Gomorrah, which were fertile lands. Although the people there led morally corrupt lives, Lot wanted to live there because of its fertility. Here we see the difference in the spiritual attitudes of Abraham and Lot. Abraham acquired wealth, but his heart was not enslaved by it. In contrast, Lot obtained wealth, and his heart became enslaved by it. What Abraham sought was the true God and truth, while what Lot sought was material prosperity and pleasure. Considering the difference in their attitudes, it can be said that Abraham’s decision to art ways with Lot was the right choice. After that, God spoke to Abraham again. God promised to give him a vast land and many descendants. The Bible tells us how the lives of Abraham and Lot ended. Abraham, who sought spiritual blessings, prospered, but Lot, who sought material prosperity, did not have a happy ending. God calls s to live by faith. Let us follow Abraham’s example and walk through life pursuing spiritual blessings.
アブラハムと彼の家族はエジプトに移住し、そこで富を得た。エジプト移住は、アブラハムの不信仰から出た行為であったにも関わらず、彼らが富んだのはアブラハム契約の故であった。しかし、その富がアブラハムのしもべ達とロトのしもべ達との間に問題を起こした。家畜やしもべの数が増えた事で、牧畜のための場所が狭くなり、牧者同士が争いを起こしたのだ。アブラハムは、この問題を解決するため、ロトに対して寛大な提案をした。別れて暮らす事を提案し、ロトに先に住む場所を選ばせたのだ。ロトは肥沃なソドムとゴモラの地に住む事を選んだ。その土地の人々は、道徳的に腐敗した生活を送っていたが、ロトは土地の肥沃さの故にそこに住む事を求めたのだった。ここに私達は、アブラハムとロトの精神性の違いを見る。アブラハムは富を得たが、その富によって心が捉えられる事はなかった。それとは逆にロトは富を持ち、それによって心が捉えられていた。アブラハムの求めていたものは、真の神と真理であり、ロトが求めていたものは物質的繁栄と快楽だったのだ。このような精神性の違いを考慮する時、アブラハムがロトと分離した事は信仰的に正しい判断であったと言える。その後、神は再びアブラハムに語りかけた。神は彼に、多大な土地と多くの子孫を与えると約束したのだ。聖書は二人の人生の結末を私達に教えている。霊的祝福を求めたアブラハムは繁栄を遂げ、物質的繁栄を求めたロトの人生は決して良い結末を迎えなかった。神は、私達に信仰によって生きる事を求めておられる。私達は、アブラハムの模範に倣い、霊的祝福を追求して生きよう。
