When humanity sinned, the Edenic Covenant was broken,and God established a new covenant with Adam. This unconditional covenant is still valid today. We will learn about its terms. First, God cursed the serpent. This was retribution for the serpent deceiving humanity. Second, God said to Satan: “The woman’s offspring shall bruise your head.” The woman’s offspring referred to Jesus Christ. Satan seemed to have won by crucifying Jesus, but Jesus shattered the power of death by rising from the dead. He utterly defeated Satan. Third, God declared that He would increase the pain of childbirth for women. He also said that marital relationships would become more difficult. Fourth, God told Adam that the land had been cursed. This meant that labor would be difficult and painful. After this event, God expelled Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. The reason for this was to prevent sinful human beings from living forever. God placed cherubim and a flaming sword at the entrance to the garden. This flaming sword was “the Shekinah Glory.” The Shekinah Glory signifies the visible manifestation of God’s presence and glory. Originally, humans enjoyed intimate fellowship with God within the Shekinah Glory in the Garden of Eden. After Adam and Eve sinned, however, the glory became a barrier between God and humanity. Nevertheless, we have hope. God slaughtered an animal for Adam and Eve and made garments of hides for them. This event foreshadowed the atonement for sin by Jesus. Through Him, we can once again draw near to God and commune with Him. Let us give thanks for His grace.
人が罪を犯したことでエデン契約は破棄され、神は新たにアダム契約を結んだ。これは無条件契約であり、今日に生きる私達にも有効である。その条項について学ぶ。第一に神は蛇を呪った。これは蛇が人間を騙した事に対する報いであった。第二に神はサタンに対し、「女の子孫がお前の頭を打ち砕く」と語った。これは聖書に記されている最初のメシア預言である。女の子孫とはイエスキリストを指す。サタンはイエスを十字架にかけた事で、一見勝利したかのように見えたが、イエスは死者の中から蘇った事で死の力を打ち破った。彼はサタンに圧勝したのである。第三に、神は女に対し産みの苦しみを増す事を告げた。また夫婦関係においても困難が生じることを告げた。第四に、神はアダムに対し、土地が呪われたことを告げた。これは労働が困難なものとなったことを意味した。この出来事の後、神はアダムとエバをエデンの園から追放した。罪の性質を持った彼らが永遠に生きないためである。神は園の入り口にケルビムと燃える剣を置いた。この燃える剣とは、シャカイナグローリーであった。シャカイナグローリーとは、神の臨在と栄光が目に見える形で現れる事を意味する。本来人間は、エデンの園において、シャカイナグローリーの中で神と親しい交わりを持っていた。ところが、罪を犯した後、その栄光が神と人とを遮断するものとなってしまったのだ。しかしながら、私達には希望がある。神はアダムとエバのために動物を屠って皮の衣を作った。これはイエスキリストによる罪の贖いの予型であった。私達は彼を通して再び神に近づき、交わる事が出来るのだ。神の恵みに感謝しよう。
