Paul said, “For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God.” He was born into a wealthy and educated family and was brilliant enough to enter Jerusalem University at a young age. He later became a Jewish rabbi who was involved in politics and achieved social success. However, despite his success, there was a shadow inside him. That shadow was hatred toward himself. He kept the law diligently, yet it was impossible for him to fully meet its demands. The judgment of his own imperfection existed in him as a shadow. Paul diligently kept the law to cover his shadow, but despite his efforts, the shadow deepened. There are shadows within us, just like Paul. These are negative emotions such as inferiority, guilt, and shame. For us, facing those shadows is painful, and like Paul we strive to cover our shadows. However, no matter how hard we try, it is impossible to get rid of those shadows. The important thing for us is not to get rid of the shadow, but to face it and accept our weakness. When we encounter Jesus Christ, the light of the Gospel shines into our hearts. That light conveys to us the message of God’s love and forgiveness. In other words, when we accept our weaknesses and seek the grace of Jesus, our shadows are illuminated by the light of the gospel. Through this, we realize that even if we are weak, we can live by God’s grace and mercy. Paul ceased to live by the law and became one who lived by the grace of Christ. Let us follow his example and live in the grace of Christ. It is the harmony of light and shadow that gives us the power to live.
パウロは、「私は神に生きるために、律法によって律法に死んだ」と語った。彼は裕福で教育熱心な家庭に生まれ、若くしてエルサレム大学に入学するほどに優秀であった。後に、彼はユダヤ教のラビとなり、政治にも関わるようになり、社会的成功者となった。しかしながら、そのような輝ける彼の成功とは裏腹に、彼の内面に は影が存在した。その影とは、自分自身への憎しみである。彼は律法を熱心に守ったが、しかし律法の要求を完全に満たす事は不可能であった。不完全な自分自身を裁く思いが、彼の内面に影として存在したのだ。パウロは自分の影を覆い隠すべく熱心に律法を守ったが、彼の努力とは裏腹にその影は深まる一方であった。私達の内面にも、パウロ同様に影が存在する。劣等感、罪意識や恥意識などの否定的な感情である。私達にとって、それらの影に直面することは痛みの伴う事であり、パウロ同様に私達は私達の影を覆い隠すべく努力をする。しかしながら、どれほど努力しても、その影を取り除く事は不可能なのだ。私達にとって重要な事は、影を取り除く事ではなく、それと向き合い、自分の弱さを受け入れる事である。私達がイエスキリストと出会う時、福音の光が私達の心に差し込む。イエスの光は、私達に神の愛と赦しのメッセージを語る。つまり、私達が自らの弱さを受け入れ、イエスの恵みを求める時に、福音の光によって、私達の影は照らされるのだ。それにより、たとえ弱さを持っていても、私達は神の恵みと哀れによって生きられる事を悟るのだ。パウロは律法によって生きる事をやめ、キリストの恵みに生きる者となった。私達も彼に倣い、キリストの恵みの内に生きよう。光と影の調和こそが、私達に生きる力を与えるのだ。
