Purim was celebrated in Israel last week. In light of this, we will study the Book of Esther. The most notable feature of this book is that the word “God” is never used within its pages. Because of this, the book’s legitimacy as scripture has been questioned in the past. Yet, despite the absence if the word “God,” God was at work behind the scenes of the narratives. Esther, a Jewish woman, was chosen by the Persian king and became queen. Around the same time, a proud man named Haman was promoted to the second highest position in the empire. Mordecai, a Jewish subject of the king and Esther’s Foster Father, refused bow down to Haman. Haman became furious and plotted to exterminate Mordecai and all Jews. Upon hearing this, Mordecai sent a message to Esther urging her to ask the king to save the Jews. According to Persian law, anyone who approached the king without permission was to be put to death. Though Esther hesitated at first, she eventually acted with faith and courage. Then, the king showed favor to Esther and granted her request. The Jews were spared from persecution, and Haman was put to death. Furthermore, Mordecai was recognized for his service to the king and replaced Haman as second-in command. During the Purim festival, people wear costumes to symbolize the “God who hides himself.” Just as the word “God” is absent from this book, there are times in our lives when it feels as though God is absent. This is because God hides Himself behind difficulties. During these times, we must look for the fingerprints He has left behind. Even when the miracles and blessings we desire don’t happen, God leaves His fingerprints on our lives, proving that He is alive. Let us always trust Him. Furthermore, let us follow Esther’s example and have faith accompanied by action.
先週、イスラエルではプリム祭が祝われた。それに伴って、今日私達はエステル記から学ぶ。この書の最も大きな特徴は、「神」という単語が一度も使われていない事にある。それ故、この書の正典としての正当性が疑われた時期もあった。しかしながら、「神」という単語が使われていなくても、物語の背後に神は働いている。 ユダヤ人のエステルは王から選ばれ王妃となった。その時期、ハマンという傲慢な男がペルシャ王の次席に昇格した。彼はエステルの養父モルデカイが自分にひれ伏さなかった事で憤慨し、ユダヤ人撲滅を計画した。それを知った時、モルデカイはエステルに、王に対してユダヤ人救済を嘆願するようメッセージを伝えた。ペルシャの法律では、許可なく王に近づいた者は死刑に処せられ た。それ故、エステルは、初めは躊躇ったものの、信仰と勇気を持って行動に移した。すると王は彼女に好意を示し、彼女の訴えを聞き入れたのだ。ユダヤ人達は迫害から逃れ、ハマンは死刑になった。またモルデカイは、王への功績が認められ、ハマンに代わって王の次席の地位を手に入れたのだ。プリム祭で、人々は仮装するが、これは「ご自分を隠される神」を象徴している。この書に「神」という単語が使われていないように、時に私達の人生にも神がいないかのように感じる事がある。それは神が、困難の背後にご自身を隠されているのだ。そのような時、私達は神が残された彼の指紋に目を向ける必要がある。たとえ、私達が望むような奇跡や祝福が起こらなくとも、神はご自分が生きているという指紋を私達の人生に残される。私達はどんな時にも彼に信頼しよう。また私達はエステルに倣い、行いの伴う信仰を持とう。
