The Philippians church was a church full of love and faith, but it also had a problem. Two women leaders were not getting along, and this was having a negative impact on the church. In chapter 2, Paul teaches about the importance of unity. He used the words encouragement, love, comfort, sharing, tenderness, and compassion, and these are things we have been receiving from God. In other words, if we live in relationship with Christ, we can love others and maintain unity in the church. At that time, humility was not considered a good thing in Greek culture. People believed that it was important to elevate themselves and be respected by others. Therefore, Paul spoke of Jesus as a model of humility. “Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death —even death on a cross!” (Verse 6~8) If we were to express Christ’s humility in one word, it would be “descent.” He abandoned his position as God, descended to earth, and died on the cross. Descending involves sacrifice, but this is precisely the mindset of Christ. When we live with the mindset of Christ, God gives us the will to fulfill His good purposes. If we put the will into practice, God will make us shine in the world. Living humbly is different from living passively. Let us be humble in our attitude yet live a life that shines in Christ.
ピリピ教会は愛と信仰に満ちた教会であったが、そこには問題もあった。二人の女性達が不仲であり、それが教会に悪影響を及ぼしていたのだ。パウロは二章で一致する事の重要性について教えている。彼は、励まし、愛、慰め、交わり、愛情、哀れみという言葉を使ったが、これらは私達が神から受けているものである。つまり、もしも私達がキリストとの繋がりに生きているならば、他者を愛する事が出来、教会内に御霊の一致を保つ事が出来るのだ。この当時、ギリシャ文化において「謙遜」とは良い事だと考えられて いなかった。自分を立派に見せる事が重要だと考えられていたのだ。それ故、パウロは謙遜の模範としてイエスについて語った。 「キリストは神の御姿である方なのに、神のあり方を捨てられいとは考えず、ご自分を無にして、仕える者の姿をとり、人間と同じようになられました。人としての性質をもって現れ、自分を卑しくし、死にまで従い、実に十字架の死にまで従われました。」(6〜8節)キリストの謙遜を一言で表現するならば、それは「下降」である。彼は神としての立場を捨てて地に降られ、十字架の死にまで従われた。私達にとって下降する事には苦痛を伴うが、それこそがキリストの謙遜なのだ。その結果、神はイエスを高く上げられた。私達がキリストのマインドセットを持って生きる時、彼は私達に志を与える。もし、私達がその志に対し、信仰を持って応答するならば、神は私達をも高く上げて下さる。その結果、私達は人々の間で「世の光として輝く」事が出来るのだ。謙遜に生きる事と消極的に生きる事とは異なる。私達は態度においては謙遜であっても、キリストにあって輝ける生き方をしよう。
