Paul experienced difficulties but rejoiced because they advanced the gospel. At that time there were those who preached the gospel with deffirent motives. One group who preached the gospel with pure motives, and the other group who preached it with the motive of tormenting Paul in prison. However, Paul rejoiced that the gospel was advanced by this, even if he himself suffered. How could Paul have such a strong spirit? The reason was that he had a clear desire. In verse 20, he says, “I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.” He was able to have strength because of his thorough devotion to Christ. Then, in verse 21, he says, “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” If one lives for Christ, he or she will not lose the meaning of life, even if imprisoned. Paul was not philosophizing here about life and death. He was in a situation where he could have been put to death at any moment. Still, for him, dying was a joy because it meant being with Christ in heaven. At the same time, it was also a joy for him to be alive because if he lived, he could preach the gospel. Paul’s goal was to hear the following words from God in heaven. “Well done, good and faithful servant!” God does not evaluate whether we have accomplished great things on earth, but whether we have been faithful to Him, even in small ways. Let us follow Paul’s example and live for Christ.
パウロは困難を経験したが、それによって福音が前進したために喜んだ。その当時、二つの動機から福音を伝える者達がいた。一つは、純粋な動機で愛を持って宣教した人々、もう一つは、獄中にいるパウロを苦しめる動機から宣教した人々だ。パウロは、たとえ自分が苦しんでも、それによって福音が前進するならば、私はそれを喜ぶと言った。何故パウロはこれほどに強靭な精神を持っていたのか?その理由は、彼が明確な願望を持っていたからである。パウロは言った。「それは私の切なる祈りと願いにかなっています。すなわち、どんな場合にも恥じることなく、いつものように今も大胆に語って、生きるにも死ぬにも私の身によって、キリストがあがめられることです。」(20節)彼は徹底して、キリストに献身していたがために、強さを持てたのだ。続けて彼は言った。「私にとっては、生きることはキリスト、死ぬことも益です。」(21節)キリストのために生きるならば、その人はたとえ投獄されたとしても生きる意味を失うことはない。ここでパウロは生と死について哲学を語っているのではない。彼はいつ死刑にされてもおかしくない状況にあり、死に直面していたのだ。それでも彼にとって死ぬことは、天国でキリストと共にいられる事を意味したので喜びであった。同時に、生きていれば福音を宣べ伝える事が出来たので、それも彼にとって喜びであった。パウロにとってのゴールは、天において神から次の言葉を聞く事であった。「良くやった。良い忠実なしもべだ。」神は、私達が地上で大きな事を成し遂げたかどうかではなく、神に忠実であったかどうかを評価される。私達もパウロに倣い、「生きる事はキリスト」と言える生き方をしよう。
