After Jesus was born, the wise men from the East came to Jerusalem to worship Him. They were Persian intellectuals. During the time when Israel was in captivity in Babylon, the prophet Daniel lived there and was highly esteemed by the king. He wrote his prophecies in his book, including the “Prophecy of Seventy Weeks.” This prophecy was written in Aramaic, the Babylonian language, which the wise men were able to understand. Therefore, they knew the approximate time of the Messiah’s birth. Additionally, Balaam, an ancestor of the Babylonians, had prophesied that a star would appear at the Messiah’s birth. This allowed the wise men to find the star of the Messiah. When they arrived in Jerusalem, they asked Herod the great, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews?” Upon hearing this, Herod was troubled. He was extremely suspicious and afraid that someone might take his throne. In fact, he had killed many of his relatives to protect it. Moreover, he oppressed the people with heavy taxes and forced labor. Herod was the king of Judea, and his way of life sent the message, “For me to live as a king, you must sacrifice yourselves.” In contrast, Jesus, the King of the Jews, radiated a different message: “Through my sacrifice, you shall live.” In other words, Jesus’s way of life as a king was the exact opposite of Herod’s. Jesus sacrificed Himself to save us. He is our Lord. Let us give thanks to Jesus. Let us also live as true worshippers, following the humble reverence demonstrated by the wise men from the East.
イエスが生まれた後、東方の博士達が彼を礼拝するためにエルサレムにやってきた。彼らはペルシャの知者達であった。バビロン捕囚時代、預言者ダニエルはその地で重んじられ、知者達の頭となった。彼は、預言を書に記したが、その中には七十週の預言が含まれ、アラム語(バビロニアの言語)で記されていた。東方の博士達は、ダニエル書を学んでいたために、メシア到来の時期を把握する事ができたのだ。またバビロン人の祖先であるバラムが、メシアの誕生時には星が現れる事を預言した。それを知っていた彼らはメシアの星を発見する事が出来た。博士達はエルサレムに着き、ヘロデ王と会見してこう尋ねた。「イスラエル人の王としてお 生まれになった方はどこにおいでになりますか?」それを聞いた時、ヘロデ王は恐れ惑った。彼は極端に猜疑心の強い男であり、自分の王位が奪われる事を最も恐れていたからだ。彼は自分の王位を守るために、自らの親族を大勢殺していた。ヘロデはユダヤの王であるが、彼の生き方が発していたメッセージは、「私が生きるために、あなた方は犠牲になりなさい」だった。それに対し、ユダヤ人の王として生まれたイエスの生き方から発信されていたメッセージは、「私が犠牲になることで、あなた方は生きる」であった。つまり、ヘロデとイエスの王としての生き方は正反対だったのだ。イエスは私達を救うためにご自分を犠牲にされた。この方こそ、私達の主である。私達はイエスに感謝し、また東方の博士達の犠牲的な礼拝姿勢に倣い、真の礼拝者として生きよう。
