In Isaiah chapter 9, he prophesied about the coming of the Messiah. In verse 1, he says: “Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan.” The towns of Zebulun and Naphtali, located in the Northern Kingdom of Israel, were destroyed by the Assyrians. The destruction was devastating, and the people endured great suffering. However, Isaiah prophesied that light would shine upon the place of darkness. As he had prophesied, Jesus appeared in Galilee and began his ministry. He healed many sick people and preached the gospel. On Christmas Day, Jesus was born in a stable. At that time, caves were used as stables in Nazareth, and they were poorly ventilated and dark. This event signified that Jesus is the true light who came into the darkness. We all have a sinful nature, and darkness dwells in our hearts. This darkness consists of negative emotions, such as guilt, regret, and feelings of inferiority. Furthermore, we sometimes commit sins in our hearts, such as lying or judging others. Nevertheless, Jesus enters our hearts and illuminates them with the light of truth. Isaiah prophesied not only of Jesus’s first coming, but also of His second coming. Though there is much darkness in this world, Jesus will eventually return and reign as King. At that time, He will bring peace to the world. Our true hope lies in Jesus alone. Let us welcome Him into our hearts and proclaim this true light to the world.
イザヤはメシアの到来を預言してこう語った。「ゼブルンとナフタリの地は辱めを受けたが、後に異邦人のガリラヤは光栄を受けた。」ゼブルンとナフタリとは北イスラエル王国の地名であり、それらの町はアッシリアによって滅ぼされた。その滅ぼされ方は悲惨であり、人々は大変な苦しみを経験した。しかしながら、イザヤは苦しみのあった場所に光がさすと語ったのだ。その預言通り、イエスがガリラヤに現れ宣教を開始した。彼は多くの病の者達を癒し、人々に福音を語ったのだ。クリスマスの日、イエスは馬小屋で誕生した。当時のナザレでは洞穴が馬小屋として使われており、それは通気性の悪い、暗い場所であった。この出来事は、イエスが闇の中に来てくださる真の光である事を示している。私達は罪の性質を持っており、その心には暗闇がある。その闇とは、罪悪感、後悔、劣等感などのネガティブな感情である。また私達は、嘘や、他者を裁くなどの罪を心の中で犯す事がある。それにも関わらず、イエスは私達の心に来てくださり、真理の光でそこを照らしてくださるのだ。イザヤは、イエスの初臨と共に、再臨についても預言している。罪の支配下にあるこの世界には、多くの暗闇が存在するが、いずれイエスは再臨され、王として支配される。その時、彼は世界に平和をもたらしてくださるのだ。イエスの内にこそ、私達の真の希望がある。私達は、イエスを心に迎え入れると共に、この真の光を人々に宣べ伝えていこう。
