Paul says, “Continue steadfastly in prayer.” (v.2) Why do we need to continue in prayer? The reason is to harmonize our hearts with God’s will through prayer. Hanna , who appears in the book of Samuel , was barren. This was because, God had closed her womb. After suffering for a long time, she prayed, “Lord, if you give me a son, I will give him back to you all the days of his life.” In that moment, she was in harmony with God’s purpose. Later, she gave birth to the prophet Samuel. At that time, the Israelites were spiritually corrupt. Therefore, God needed a leader to revive their true spirituality. Similarly, we may become discouraged when our prayers seem to go unanswered. At such times, God may be waiting for our hearts to harmonize with His. In the latter part of Chapter 4, Paul mentions his fellow workers. Paul’s ministry had a tremendous impact on the world, but it was accomplished not by him alone, but with the help of his fellow workers. American theologian Elton Trueblood wrote a book titled “The Company of the Committed,” and Paul and his fellow workers were indeed a company of the committed. For the gospel to advance, a community of dedicated people is essential. Paul said, “See that you fulfill the ministry that you have received in the Lord.”(v.17) What is your God given ministry? Like Hannah, when we enter into the harmony of God’s purpose through prayer, it will be found. Let us commit ourselves to Christ.
パウロは、「たゆみなく祈りなさい」と語った。何故私達には、たゆみない祈りが必要なのか?それは、祈りを通して、私達の心と神の御心のハーモニーを調和させるためである。サムエル記に登場するハンナは不妊であった。神が彼女の胎を閉ざしていたからである。長い苦しみの後、彼女は祈りの中で「もし神が男の子を与えて下さったら、その子を神に捧げます」と誓った。その瞬間、彼女は神の目的のハーモニーの中に入ったのだ。後に彼女は預言者サムエルを産んだ。この当時、イスラエルは霊的に堕落していた。それ故、神は彼らを霊的に復興させるリーダーを必要としていたのだ。同様に、私達も祈りが神に答えられず落胆する事がある。そのような時、神は、私達の心と神の心が調和するのを待っているのかもしれない。4章の後半で、パウロは彼の動労者達について言及している。パウロの宣教は、世界に大きなインパクトを与えたが、それは彼一人の力ではなく、動労者達の助けがあって成し遂げられたのだ。アメリカの神学者、エルトントゥルーブラッドは「献身者達の共同体」という本を記したが、まさにパウロと彼の動労者達は、キリストに献身した者達であった。福音が前進するためには、献身者達の共同体が不可欠である。パウロは「主にあって受けた務めを果たしなさい」と語ったが、あなたにとって主から受けた務めとは何か?ハンナのように、祈りを通して、あなたが神の目的のハーモニーに入る時、それは見出されるだろう。私達は、キリストにコミットして生きていこう。
