In today’s scripture, Paul teaches about the preeminence of Christ. All things were created through Him and for Him. All things are held together by Him. Furthermore, Christ was the first to rise from the dead and become the head of the church. Paul emphasized the preeminence and resurrection of Christ because the church in Colosse was being influenced by the false teachings of the Gnostics. The Gnostics believed that spiritual things were holy but that material things were impure. Some among them even claimed that Christ was not God, but merely an angel. The problem with their teaching was their denial of Christ’s incarnation. If Christ had not become incarnate, His death on the cross would not have occurred. To counter those false teachings, Paul taught about the preeminece of Christ. Everything was created through Jesus and for Jesus. Therefore, we need to make Him our top priority in our lives. We should not only value actions like attending worship services and giving offerings, but also place Jesus first in our thoughts. Instead of clinging to our own desires and plans, we should find joy in submitting to God’s will. Putting God first in everything may sound like a demanding teaching, but it is not. When we entrust everything to God and live accordingly, his wonderful plan unfolds in our lives. It is a beautiful way to live. Jesus is preeminent in His very being, and at the same time, He is preeminent in the abundance of His love and grace. Let us trust in Him and make Him our priority.
パウロは、ここでキリストの卓越性について教えている。すべての被造物は、彼によって、彼のために作られた。また万物は彼によって保たれている。更にキリストは、死者の中から初めに蘇られ、教会の頭となられた。何故、パウロがキリストの卓越性と蘇りを強調したかと言うと、この当時グノーシス派によって間違った教えが教会に影響を与えていたからである。彼らは霊的なものは聖いが、物質的なものは汚れていると考えた。また彼らのうちの一部は、キリストは神ではなく、天使の一人だと主張した。彼らの教えの問題点は、キリストの受肉を否定した事にある。もしも、キリストが受肉しなかったのならば、十字架の死は起こらなかった事になる。それらの間違った教えに対抗するために、パウロはキリストがいかに卓越した存在であるかを語ったのだ。すべての被造物は、イエスによって、イエスのために造られた。そうであるならば、私達はイエスを優先順位の第一として生きるべきである。礼拝出席や献金などの行いに加えて、私達は精神的にも彼を第一とする必要がある。自分の考えや計画に固執せず、神の御旨に従う事を喜びとするのだ。全てにおいて神を第一とする事は、厳しい教えに聞こえるかもしれないが、そうではない。私達が全てを神の御手に委ねて生きる時、彼の素晴らしい計画が私達の人生に実現するのだ。それは美しい生き方である。イエスはその存在において卓越しているが、それと同時に愛と恵みの豊さにおいても卓越されている。私達は、彼に信頼し、彼を第一として生きよう。
