Paul said, “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.” He was born with Roman citizenship, which suggests that he grew up in a wealthy family. However, he lost his high social status when he became a servant of Christ. During his missionary journeys, Paul experienced hunger and persecution. Furthermore, when he wrote the Letter to the Philippians, he was imprisoned in Rome. Despite this, he repeatedly used the words “joy”and “rejoice” throughout the letter. He rejoiced even in the midst of hardship. Paul said he “learned” to rejoice in Christ. In other words, when faced with hardship, he chose to rejoice by focusing on spiritual realities. What brought Paul joy was the love of the Philippians church congregation, the love of Christ, and the hope of heaven. Some people’s faith is strengthened when they are blessed and weakened when they face hardship. Conversely, some people’s faith grows during hardship but wanes when they experience success. Such people are spiritually immature, while spiritually mature people can rejoice in Christ under any circumstances. Joseph, who is mentioned in the Book of Genesis, was born into a privileged environment and was cherished by his father. However, remaining in such an environment did not bring Joseph true happiness. God put Joseph through a long and severe trial that revealed his hidden talents. Joseph excelled as ruler of Egypt by using those talents. That was the life that brought Joseph true joy. We will come to know true joy through experiencing hardship. No matter what circumstances we face, let us learn to be content in Christ.
語った。彼は生まれながらにローマの市民権を持っており、それは彼が非常に裕福な家庭に育ったことを示唆している。しかしながら、彼はキリストのしもべとなることで、高い社会的地位を失った。伝道者として宣教の旅をしたパウロは、飢えや迫害を経験した。更に、彼がピリピ人への手紙を書いた時、彼はローマの獄中にいた。それにも関わらず、彼はこの手紙の中で繰り返し「喜び」という単語を使ったのだ。それはまさに彼が困難の中でも喜んでいたからだ。パウロはキリストにあって喜ぶことを「学んだ」と語った。つまり、彼は困難に直面した時、霊的現実に目を向ける事で、喜ぶ事を選択したのだ。パウロに喜びをもたらしていたのは、ピリピ教会の信徒達の愛、キリストの愛、そして天国への希望であった。ある人々は、祝福の中で信仰を増し、困難の中で信仰を低下させる。逆に、困難の中で信仰が成長し、成功すると信仰を失う者達もいる。そのような人々は霊的に未熟であり、霊的に成熟した人々はどのような状況下でもキリストにあって喜ぶ事が出来る。創世記に登場するヨセフは、父親から寵愛を受け、恵まれた環境に生まれた。しかしながら、そのような環境に留まる事がヨセフにとって真の幸福ではなかった。神は、彼に長く厳しい試練を通られることで、彼の中に秘められていた才能を開花させた。ヨセフはその才能を用いて、エジプトの統治者として活躍したのだ。それこそが、ヨセフにとって真に喜びがある人生だった。私達は苦難を経験するからこそ、真の喜びを知る事が出来る。私達はどんな境遇の中でも、キリストにあって満ち足りる事を身につけよう。
