Filled with joy, Paul wrote a letter to the Philippians church to express his gratitude. This was because, the Philippians church had shown sympathy for Paul in prison and sent him gifts and offerings. The words “joy” and “rejoice” are used in this letter 16 times. At that time, however, Paul was in a Roman prison, not a pleasant situation. The Christians in Philippi were also suffering from persecution. Nevertheless, Paul was full of joy and encouraged the Philippians to rejoice in Christ. In other words, joy in Christ is joy that is not dependent on circumstances. How could Paul rejoice in the midst of difficulties? The answer is that Paul considered it a joy to suffer for Christ’s sake. The main theme in this letter is to “have the same mindset as Christ.” (2:5) Jesus was in very nature God but made himself nothing and became obedient to death on the cross. In other words, the mindset of Christ means humbling and pouring ourselves out for God. Therefore, Paul expressed joy while imprisoned for preaching the Gospel. The Philippian church was planted by Paul, who said to them,
“He (God) who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” The day of Christ Jesus is the time when we end our earthly life. God, who has led us to salvation, will lead us to completion in our life of faith. In the process, we experience sanctification. Sanctification is the transformation of our character into the likeness of Christ. In other words, our mindset will become like Christ’s mindset. Let us engage in the work of preaching the gospel as Paul and the Philippians did. As a result, we can learn to rejoice in Christ in every situation.
パウロはピリピ教会のメンバー達に対し、感謝を伝えるため、喜びに溢れてこの手紙を書いた。何故ならば、ピリピ教会は牢獄にいるパウロを思いやり、贈り物と献金を送ったからだ。この手紙には喜びという言葉が16回使われている。しかしながら、この時パウロはローマの獄中におり、決して喜べる状況になかった。またピリピのクリスチャン達も迫害下にあった。それにも関わらず、パウロは喜びに溢れており、ピリピの信徒達にもキリストにあって喜ぶよう励ました。キリストにある喜びとは状況に左右されない喜びなのだ。何故パウロは困難の中にあって喜ぶ事が出来たのか?この手紙の中心聖句は「キリストの心を汝の心とせよ」(2:5)である。キリストは神と等しくあられたのにご自分を無にして人となり、十字架の死にまで従われた。つまりキリストの心とは、神のために自身を注ぎ出す事なのだ。パウロは福音を宣べ伝えた事で苦しみに遭ったが、彼はキリストのために苦しむ事を喜びとした。ピリピ教会はパウロが開拓した教会であるが、彼は彼らに「あなた方のうちに良い働きを始めた方は、キリストイエスの日が来るまでにそれを完成させてくださる」と語った。キリストイエスの日とは、私達が地上生涯を終える時である。私達のうちに信仰を始めた神は、私たちの信仰を最後まで導いて下さるのだ。またその間、私達は聖化を経験する。聖化とは、私達の人格がキリストに似た者とされる事である。つまり、私達の心がキリストの心と同じようになっていくのだ。私達はパウロやピリピの信徒達がしたように福音宣教の業に励もう。その結果、私達はどのような状況下にあってもキリストにあって喜ぶ事を身につける事が出来る。
