A famous Chinese church leader Watchman Nee divided the letter to the Ephesians into three paragraphs. The first paragraph is chapters 1 through 3, and its theme is “Sit.” Here Paul teaches about the spiritual reality given to Christians and urges us to sit in that reality. The second paragraph is from chapter 4 to chapter 6:9, and its theme is “walk.” Here, Paul teaches about the practice of a life of faith. The third paragraph is from chapter 6, verses 10 to 24, and its theme is “stand.” Here Paul teaches about spiritual war and the secret to victory over Satan’s attacks lies not in fighting but in our standing firm in Christ. This is because Christ has already triumphed over Satan. Paul teaches us to put on the following spiritual armor. 1: The belt of truth. Just as wearing a belt creates a good amount of tension in our bodies, standing in the truth brings a good amount of tension to our faith life. 2: The breastplate of righteousness. We are made righteous by believing in Christ, not by our deeds. 3: Shoes of the Gospel of Peace. Isaiah said that the feet of those who preach the gospel are beautiful. We are to proclaim the gospel of peace with our feet, that is, with our actions. 4: The shield of faith. Ancient Roman armies protected themselves from arrows fired from enemy lines by forming up and using shields. Likewise, we fight in cooperation with our brothers and sisters in Christ and thereby extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 5: The helmet of salvation. Our joy in salvation protects our thoughts. 6: The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. When Jesus was tested by the devil, he used the Word of God to resist. Likewise, we can overcome the devil’s attacks by standing firm in the Word of God.
中国の教会指導者ウォッチマンニーは、エペソ人への手紙を三つの段落に区分した。第一段落は一章から三章までで、そのテーマは「座す」。ここでパウロはキリスト者に与えられた霊的現実について語り、その現実に座すよう説いている。第二段落は四章から六章九節までで、そのテーマは「歩く」。ここでは信仰生活の実践について教えられている。第三段落は六章十節から二十四節までで、そのテーマは「立つ」。ここでは霊的戦いについて教えられているが、サタンの攻撃に勝つための秘訣は、戦う事ではなく私達がキリストにしっかりと立つ事にある。何故ならはキリストは既にサタンに勝利されたからだ。パウロは私達に以下の霊的武具を身につけるよう教えている。1:真理の帯。ベルトを身につける事が私達の体に程よい緊張感を与えるように、真理に立つ事で私達の信仰生活には程よい緊張感がもたらされる。2:正義の胸当て。私達は行いによるのではなく信仰によって義とされる。3:平和の福音の備えの履き物。イザヤは福音を伝える者の足は美しいと語った。私達は足を使い、すなわち行動を持って平和の福音を伝えるのだ。4:信仰の大盾。古代ローマの軍隊は、隊列を組み、盾を用いる事で敵陣から放たれる矢から身を守った。同様に、私達は個人で戦うのではなく、教会に属する事で兄弟姉妹と共に悪魔の放つ火矢を打ち消すのだ。5:救いの兜。私達が救われた事への喜びを持って生きるならば、その喜びが私達の思考を守る。6:御霊の与える剣である神の言葉。イエスは悪魔の試みに遭われた時、神の言葉を用いて戦われた。同様に、私達も神の言葉に堅く立つことで、悪魔の攻撃に打ち勝つ事が出来る。
