Christians in the early church were living together. It was a community of mutual support, where they shared their possessions with others. As a result, none of them were poor. Barnabas owned a field, which he sold and gave all the proceeds to the community. He also dedicated his life to God and devoted himself to missionary work. Perhaps his act of
dedication would have been admired by the people. When Ananias and Sapphira saw this, they sold their possessions and gave the proceeds to the community. However, they made it look like they donated everything and kept some of the proceeds for themselves. Their actions were superficially like those of Barnabas, but their motivations were very different. As a result, they were judged by God and died as a penalized for deceiving the Holy Spirit. The verb they “kept” a portion of the proceeds is the same word used in the book of Joshua for the verb that Achan secretly “kept ” for himself what he should have destroyed. By daring to use the same word, Luke was trying to remind his readers of Achan’s sin. The judgment against the couple was very severe, which was peculiar to the early Christian era. However, there is a lesson we can learn from this story. The cleansing of sin from the church made the work of the Holy Spirit more prominent. (Acts 5:12-16) Let us seek to have our hearts and lives cleansed by the Holy Spirit. Let us follow the example of Barnabas and serve God wholeheartedly. As a result, we will experience the remarkable work of the Holy Spirit.

行為は人々から称賛を受けたであろう。それを見たアナニアとサッピラも、自分達の持ち物を売り、その代金を共同体に捧げた。しかしながら、彼らは全て捧げたと偽り、その代金の一部を自らのために取っておいた。彼らのした行為は、バルナバのそれと表面的には似ていたが、その動機においては大きく異なった。その結果、彼らは聖霊を欺いた事への報いとして、神によって裁かれ死
んでしまった。彼らが代金の一部を「取っておいた」という動詞は、ヨシュア記でアカンが聖絶のものの一部を「取っておいた」という動詞と同じ単語が使われている。ルカは敢えて同じ単語を使うことで、読者にアカンの罪を思い起こさせようとしたのだ。この二人に対する裁きは非常に厳しいものであったが、それは初期キリスト教の時代における特有のものであった。しかしながら、この物語から私達が学ぶべき教訓はある。教会から罪のパン種が清められた事により、聖霊の働きがより顕著になったのだ。(使徒5:12〜16)私達は、聖霊によって自らの心と思い、そして生活が清められる事を求めよう。またバルナバに倣い、真心から神に仕えよう。その結果、私達は顕著な聖霊の働きを経験するようになる。
