During his long flight from Saul, David sought shelter with thePhilistine king Achish and dwelt in Gath. However, this was a misguided decision. In Psalm 23, David said in faith,“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil. I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” However, David at this time was caught up not in faith but in fear, and he left Israel, the house of the Lord and dwelt in the land of the Philistines. Nor did he follow the voice of his own heart and seek God’s will. During the year and four months that he lived in Gath, David made a living by plundering. He also reported falsely to Achish, saying, “We attacked the land of Israel.” Then one day, something happened that put David in a tight spot. When he and his men returned from an army muster, their city had been attacked by Amalekites, who had looted their families and all their possessions. When David and his men saw this, they wept loudly, and later his men began to hold David accountable and say they were going to kill him. In addition to his family and possessions, David had lost the trust of his men. However, when all was lost, David found strength in the Lord. (30:6) In other words, David restored his faith again in the midst of his plight. This implies that he repented of his unbelief. David then used Ephod to ask the Lord’s will and pursued the Amalekites. They launched a surprise attack and were able to recover all their families and possessions. David had a long period of unbelief and sin, but when he repented, the Lord instantly forgave and helped him. God’s forgiveness is abundant beyond human understanding. There will be times when we, like David, will stagnate in our faith. The key to recovery lies in repentance. Let us follow David’s example and turn our eyes to the Lord. The Lord forgives us abundantly.
長引くサウルからの逃亡生活の中で、ダビデはペリシテ人の王アキシュに庇護を求め、ガテに住み着いた。しかし、これは誤った判断であったと言えるだろう。詩篇23篇の中で、ダビデは信仰に満ちてこう語った。「たとえ死の影の谷を歩くことがあっても、私は災いを恐れません。私はいつまでも主の家に住まいましょう。」ところが、この時のダビデは恐れに捕われ、イスラエルを離れて、ペリシテ人の地に住み着いてしまったのだ。また彼は自らの心の声に 従い、神の御旨を求める事をしなかった。ペリシテの地に住んだ一年四ヶ月の間、ダビデは略奪行為をして生計を立てていた。またアキシュには「私達はイスラエルの地を攻撃した」と言って、偽りの報告をしていた。そんなある時、ダビデを窮地に陥らせる出来事が起こった。彼と部下達が軍隊の招集から戻った時、彼らの 街がアマレク人によって襲われ、家族と全ての所有品が略奪されてしまっていたのだ。それを見た時、ダビデと部下達は激しく泣き、その後で部下達がダビデの責任を追求し、彼を殺そうと言い始めた。ダビデは自分の家族、所有品に加え、部下達からの信頼をも失ってしまった。しかし、全てを失った時、ダビデは「彼の神、主によって奮い立った。」(30:6)つまり、ダビデは窮地の中で、 再び彼の信仰を回復させたのだ。これは暗に、彼が自らの不信仰 を悔い改めた事を意味する。その後、ダビデはエポデを用いて、主の御旨を伺った上でアマレク人を追跡した。彼らは奇襲攻撃を仕掛け、全ての家族と所有品を取り返す事が出来た。ダビデには長い不信仰と罪の期間があったが、彼が悔い改めた時、主は瞬時に彼を赦し、助けた。神の赦しは人の理解を超えて豊かなのである。私達もダビデのようにその信仰が低迷する時があるだろう。そこから回復するための鍵は悔い改めにある。私達もダビデに倣い、私達の目を主に向けよう。主は私達を豊かに赦して下さる。
