The scripture theme for Horizon Japanese Church in 2024 is “The Lord strengthens those whose hearts are fully committed to him.” The Lord is asking us to commit our hearts to the heart of God. This phrase was spoken to Asa, king of southern Judah. He was a religious king whose deeds were pleasing to God, but in his later years he fell into unbelief. At that time, the prophet Hanani spoke these words to Asa, pointing out his sin. However, Asa did not repent of his sin even after hearing these words, as a result he became very ill. The history of Israel is described in the books of Chronicles and Kings, and what that history teaches us is the truth that the attitude of our hearts toward God determines our lives. Because of King Solomon’s unbelief, Israel was divided into Southern Judah and Northern Israel. 19 kings were established in northern Israel, but none of them was a religious king, and the people never turned to the Lord. As a result, they were destroyed by Assyria. In contrast, 20 kings were established in southern Judah, including eight religious kings. In other words, the people of southern Judah turned to the Lord eight times. As a result, Southern Judah remained a nation about 180 years longer than Northern Israel. The king who most conformed to God’s will in Israel’s history was David. He pursued God’s heart, and as a result, Israel achieved great prosperity both spiritually and materially in his time. In this way, God expresses His power over those who commit their hearts to Him. This year, let us pursue God’s heart and experience the power of the living God.
2024年のホライズン日本人教会の基調聖句は「主は、その心がご自分と全く一つになっている人々に御力をあらわす」である。主は、私達に神ご自身の心と私達の心とを一つにするよう求めておられるのだ。この言葉は、南ユダの王アサに対して語られた言葉
であった。彼は信仰的な王であり、その行いが神に喜ばれていたが、晩年、彼は不信仰に陥ってしまった。その時に預言者ハナニ
がアサにこの言葉を語り、彼の罪を指摘したのであった。しかしながらアサはその言葉を聞いても自らの罪を悔い改める事なく、その結果彼は重病にかかってしまった。歴代誌や列王記にはイスラエルの歴史が描かれているが、その歴史が私達に教えている事
は、私達が神に対してどのような心の姿勢を持つかが、私達の生活を決定づけるという真理である。ソロモン王の不信仰が原因で
イスラエルは南ユダと北イスラエルとに分割されてしまった。北イスラエルには19人の王が立てられたが、その中に信仰的な王は
一人もおらず、民は一度も主に立ち返らなかった。その結果として、紀元前772年にアッシリアによって滅ぼされてしまった。それ
に対し、南ユダには20人の王が立てられ、その中には8人の信仰的な王がいた。つまり南ユダの民は8回、主に立ち返ったのだ。そ
の結果、南ユダは北イスラエルよりも、180年長く国が存続したのだ。イスラエルの歴史上、最も神の御心に適った王はダビデで
あった。彼は、神の御心を追い求め、その結果彼の時代にイスラエルは、霊的にも物質的にも大繁栄を遂げたのであった。このよ
うにして、神はご自分をその心を一つにする者達に対して御力を表されるのだ。今年、私達は神の御心を追求し、生きて働く神の
御力を体験しよう。
