A young man approached Jesus and asked, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” The English bible gives this story the
title “A Rich Young Ruler.” This means that this young man was in a leadership position at a young age and was financially well-off. Also, he was humble and personable. Furthermore, he had great spiritual insight, seeing that in Jesus there was eternal life. Jesus told him to sell all his possessions and give to the poor. When this young man heard this, he was sad and left Jesus. He had been confident in his deeds, but at that time, for the first time, he was faced with something he could not do. How should this young man have responded? The answer is simple. All he had to say was, “It’s impossible for me.” Eternal life cannot be attained by human effort or deed. Christians are those who have acknowledged that we cannot earn salvation by our efforts. That is why we rely on the grace of Jesus Christ. Nor is it possible to grow spiritually through our efforts. This is because, with our sinful nature, we sin in our hearts, even if we are good in our deeds. In other words, we cannot become perfect Christians by striving. The Bible does not tell us to “strive.” What the Bible asks us to do is to trust God, to rely on God, and to be connected to Jesus. When we admit what we cannot do and live dependent on Jesus, we are remade into new people by the power of the Holy Spirit. That is the world of grace.
イエスの元に一人の青年が近づき、「永遠の命を得るために私は何をすべきですか」と尋ねた。英語の聖書はこの物語を「リッチヤングルーラー」と題している。つまり、彼は若くして指導者的立場にあり、経済的にも富んでいたのだ。また彼は謙遜で、人格者で もあった。更に、彼はイエスの内に永遠の命がある事を見抜き、霊的洞察力にも優れていた。イエスは彼に彼の持ち物を全て売って貧しい人に施すよう言った。それを聞いた時、この青年は悲しみ、イエスの元から去って行った。それまで彼は自分の行いに自信を持っていたが、初めて自分に出来ない事に直面したからだ。この青年はこの時どうすべきだったのだろうか?その答えは簡単である。「私には出来ません」と言えば良かったのだ。永遠の命を得ることは人間の努力や行いによっては出来ない。クリスチャンは自分には出来ない事を認めた者達である。だからこそ、私達はイエスキリストの恵みに依り頼むのだ。また、私達に出来ない事は永遠の命を得ることだけではない。努力によって霊的成長をすることも出来ない。何故なら、罪の性質を持った私達はたとえ行いにおいて立派であったとしても、心の中で罪を犯してしまうからだ。つまり努力によって私達は完璧なクリスチャンになることは出来ない。聖書は私達に「努力せよ」とは語っていない。聖書が私達に求めていることは、神に信頼すること、神により頼むこと、イエスに繋がっている事である。自分には出来ないことを認め、イエスに依存して生きる時、私達は聖霊の力によって新しい人に作り替えられる。それが恵みの世界なのだ。
