Jesus healed a blind man in Bethsaida. This healing was unusual because the healing occurred in two steps. This conveys the fact that his healing happened in two steps, also it may symbolize that there are steps to our spiritual eyes being opened. Jesus went with his disciples to Caesarea Philippi and asked them, “Who do you say I am?” Then Peter replied, “You are the Messiah.” That was the moment when Peter’s spiritual eyes were opened. Jesus then began to tell His disciples that He would soon be crucified. At that time Peter rebuked Jesus, but Jesus said to Peter, ” You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.” His spiritual eyes were still only seeing blurry images. Jesus continued, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” Here we are taught the secret of how to see clearly with our spiritual eyes. When we accepted Jesus as our Savior, we knew God’s love and Jesus’ sacrifice. In other words, we knew Jesus is for us. Later, as our faith grows, we will deny ourselves, take up our crosses, and follow Jesus. Then we will live for Jesus. When we begin to live for Jesus, our spiritual eyes are fully opened. Paul prayed that “the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, ” so that we may see hope in living to God’s calling. To take up one’s cross and live is a life full of hope. Let us take up our crosses and follow Jesus.
イエスはベツサイダで盲目の男を癒された。この癒しは異例であり、二段階で癒しが起こった。これは、事実として彼の目が段階的に癒された事と同時に、私達の霊の目が開かれるのに段階があることを象徴している。イエスは弟子達と共にピリポカイザリアに行き、彼らに「あなた方は私を誰と言うか」と尋ねた。するとペテロが「あなたはキリストです」と答えた。それはペテロの霊の目が日開かれた瞬間であった。その後、イエスはご自分がまもなく十字架に架かる事を弟子達に話し始めた。その時ペテロがイエスをいさめたが、イエスは「あなたは神の事を思わないで人の事を思っ ている」とペテロを叱責した。彼の霊の目はまだ完全に見えていなかったのだ。それに続けてイエスは「誰でも私について来たいと思うなら、自分を捨て、自分の十字架を負いなさい」と語られた。ここに私達の霊の目が完全に開かれるための秘訣がある。私達がイエスを救い主として受け入れた時、私達は神の愛やイエスの犠牲を知った。イエスが私達のために存在される事を知ったのだ。しかしながら、私達の信仰が成長し、自分を捨て、自分の十字架を負ってイエスに従う時、その関係性は、私がイエスのために存在するという関係になる。私達がイエスのために生きるようになる時、私達の霊の目は完全に開かれる。パウロは「あなた方の心の目がハッキリと見えるように」と祈ったが、それは神の召しに応答する事への希望を見るためであった。自分の十字架を負って生きることは辛い道ではなく、むしろ希望に溢れる生き方である。私達は自分の十字架を負い、イエスに従って歩んでいこう。
